It started with a bookcafé on a tiny island in Indonesia.
In 2024, we built and opened Tales Bookcafé on Nusa Lembongan, Bali.
We’re a husband-and-wife team with two slightly different passions. She loves books. He loves surfing — and runs his surf school right next door.
What started as an empty space slowly became the book-filled café we had imagined: a place to read, meet, swap books, connect with other book lovers and relax after hours out on the waves.
From one bookish place to thousands
While building Tales bookcafé, another idea started to grow.
Whenever we travelled, we found ourselves looking for the little independent bookshop down a side street, a beautiful old library, a café filled with books, a hotel with its own literary story.
The kinds of places you might never find unless you knew to look for them.
We started wondering: what if there was one place to discover them all?
Not just the famous literary landmarks, but the independent businesses, hidden gems and special places that make the bookish community what it is.
That idea became Land of Tales.
Building Land of Tales
At the beginning of 2026, the first draft of Land of Tales was sent to our developers and the idea started becoming a real app.
At the same time, we took the research offline.
Over six months, we visited around 200 bookish places, discovering what makes each one different and talking to the people behind the places we want Land of Tales to celebrate.
And we’re only getting started.
From one little bookcafé in Bali to a growing map of bookish places around the world, our goal is simple:
to make the bookish world easier to discover — and bring the people and places within it a little closer together.
